Photo by @daviddoubilet A harp seal pup called a white coat waits for its mother on the sea ice covering the #GulfofStLawrence. The pups are born in late February and nursed for 12-15 days before they are abandoned by their mother. It is a harsh environment and mortality is high. The 2015 pupping season saw solid ice and higher survivorship than in previous years with poor ice cover. A curious Maori Wrasse at Opal Reef on Great Barrier Reef sees its reflection in my glass dome on my camera. It would gently bump the dome and back up waiting for a reaction from its reflected self. These guys can weigh up to 400 pounds and live to 45 + years if left alone. They have disappeared from many indopacific reef systems due to overfishing and they have landed on the #IUCN #Redlist as #Endangered in #CITES Appendix. Coral chaos covers the top Kimbe Bommie, one of many seamounts in Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea. Each seamount we dove on had a different ecosystem and personality. Some had giant schools of barracuda while others had robust reefs. The seamounts are like vertical marine protected areas because they are isolated and not easily fished.
